A420 London Road Travel Bulletin - 11.2.15

What you need to know

  • Work on the improvement phase on is now substantially complete. There is some minor footway work to be done, which we will do in the next two weeks. Other than localised barriers, all temporary traffic management has been removed from A420 London within the improvement scheme phase.
  • The crossing near Northfield Road has been upgraded and the temporary crossing has been removed.
  • The installation of replacement safety barrier continues on the A40 approach to Green Road roundabout.  This should be completed within a week and the filter lane to the eastern bypass will be re-opened and all temporary traffic management on the A40 will be removed.
  • Resurfacing on the A420, from Northfields Road to Green Road roundabout, will be completed late April/early May as a coordinated part of the maintenance work covered below.

Maintenance Work

  • Work started on the maintenance phase of the London Road scheme on Monday 5 January. This work includes resurfacing of the carriageway and reconstruction of the bus lane from Wharton Road to Northfield Road.
  • Despite the cold and wet weather experienced early in the scheme, progress has been good and we can report that sections one and two have been successfully completed to programme.
  • Work has started on section three of the works and includes installation of a new drainage kerb system. Despite experiencing some delays due to snow, progress continues to be on programme.
  • Due to the closures of the existing westbound Gladstone Road and Green Road Roundabout bus stops, a temporary bus stop has been installed opposite Sefton Road to serve these stops.

The Scheme

The county council is investing £2.1million to deliver public transport and cycle improvements and a new road surface on the A420 London Road. Work started on 13 October 2015.

London Road is one of Oxford’s busiest arterial routes leading in from the east. Each day around 16,000 vehicles, including up to 900 buses and coaches, use the route. It also serves as a key distributor road for residents and businesses of Headington.

The work will be carried out in two phases with the first being the construction of the bus and cycle improvements at the Green Road roundabout and on London Road in the area of the Lyndworth Close junction. This phase is now largely complete.

The second phase is taking place between January and May 2015 and includes resurfacing from the junction with Wharton Road to the junction with Northfield Road - a distance of approximately 500 metres.
