Progress so far
The improvements to the Old Road-Roosevelt Drive-Warneford Lane-Gipsy Lane junction - part of the Access to Headington Scheme - are now well underway and progressing well.
The project started on Monday 17 October, with four-way manually controlled temporary lights being used to manage traffic. The work is taking place between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm weekdays and on Saturday mornings.
We started work to remove the central traffic islands on Old Road, Roosevelt Drive and Warneford Lane over the first week and half so that we can move the traffic over when working in the next two phases. Towards the end of the project, we will reinstate the traffic islands.
On Wednesday, we moved into the second phase - you can see the layout of the traffic management and where we are working in the drawing below. The second phase will see us working on the corner of Warneford Lane and Gipsy lane and also the opposite corner of the junction, Old Road and Roosevelt Drive. Here we will begin diverting utilities and widening the approaches to the junction. This phase will take approximately eight weeks to complete, before we switch our working site into the other two corners of the junction.
We are now working in the footpaths and diversions for pedestrians are in place. The footpath along the south side of Old Road has been closed and pedestrians are being diverted across onto the other side of the road while this phase is ongoing. We have maintained the footpath on the corner of the junction outside Cheney School, however it has been narrowed to accommodate the work.
Public transport
During this second phase, in order for us to be able to carry out the construction work to Old Road, we have had to close the bus stop travelling westbound towards the main junction. This bus stop will be reinstated once the improvements to the junction have been completed in February 2017. The bus stop on the opposite side of the road on the corner of Valentia Road has been moved further east on Old Road to allow sufficient room for the traffic to continue to flow efficiently.
We are working closely with the bus companies to minimise disruption as much as possible.
