Frideswide Square Travel Bulletin - 20.10.15
Frideswide Square is taking shape and there is a lot of work going on in the coming days and weeks.
Latest progress
Work to the paving is on-going in a number of areas across the square, including outside the station and at the junction of Hollybush Row and Park End Street.
These areas are due to be complete in the coming few days and we will We then progress paving the area directly outside the Royal Oxford Hotel. We have also started installing the new granite kerbs along Becket Street. Most of the lighting columns across the square have been installed, tested and are now up and running.
The work outside the shop frontages began on Monday 19 October. We are now progressing the drainage work and footway surfacing from the west at Becket Street junction to the east at Hollybush Row. During this time, the businesses will remain open and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Temporary road closures and diversions
We will carry out resurfacing at the junction of Park End Street and Hollybush Road from Wednesday 21 October and this will take three nights to complete. During this time, Hollybush Row and Park End Street will be closed and traffic will be diverted via Becket Street and Hythe Bridge Street.
Access for businesses and residents on Park End Street during the night time road closures will be possible from the city centre end of Park End Street. Park End Street will be re-opened to one-way traffic (towards the city centre) in the daytime.
Further temporary night-time road closures are required in order for us to complete the surfacing for the new layout. These will follow on from the closure of Park End Street (explained below) ending Friday 30 October and further information on these will be provided in the next edition of this e-bulletin.
Park End Street
We have now completed the waterproofing to the north of Pacey’s Bridge and are now working on Park End Street itself. This work involves removing the current kerbs, improving the footpath and then putting back the kerbs. We are also repairing the drainage in the area.
We will begin the first phase of resurfacing on Park End Street on Sunday 25 October (during the day) and then this resurfacing will continue for up to five nights from Monday 26 October.
Pedestrian access will be maintained through the times when the road closures are in operation. Clear routes for pedestrians will be signed and marked-out with guard railing. During times when Park End Street is closed, Tidmarsh Lane will also be closed at its junction with Park End Street and become a no-through road.
All traffic wishing to access Tidmarsh Lane will be directed to use the signed diversion route along Hythe Bridge Street and Hollybush Row.
Resurfacing activities that are particularly noisy (such as removing the existing road surface or using disc saws and pneumatic breakers) will be completed by 11pm on each night shift. However, laying and compaction of new surfacing materials will continue throughout the night shift. These activities are generally less noisy, but some levels of noise should be expected.
Once this resurfacing has been completed, we will then be ready for phase 2 of the project which is on the south side of Park End Street.
