Title

The Plain Roundabout Improvements

Welcome to the first bulletin informing you about the works that are taking place at The Plain Roundabout, Oxford.  These will be issued on a regular basis with the aim of keeping everyone updated on progress, planned activities and key forthcoming changes to traffic management.

What you need to know

The Plain roundabout scheme aims to improve one of the main cycling barriers into and out of Oxford city centre. The Plain is a busy five-arm roundabout with high bus and cyclist flows. The county council is embarking on a project to improve the attractiveness and safety of the roundabout for cyclists and pedestrians by reducing the width of the circulatory carriageway and tightening the entrances onto the roundabout.

Due to local constraints, work on the roundabout requires some temporary road closures, with local traffic diversions and these take place as listed below. We will also require night time road closures to accommodate resurfacing works to the roundabout.

1. Close the access onto St Clement’s Street from The Plain Roundabout, approximately two weeks from 19 January to 1 February 2015.

2. Close the exit onto The Plain Roundabout from St Clement’s Street, approximately two weeks from 2 February to 15 February 2015.

3. Close Cowley Road, approximately three weeks from 16 February to 8 March 2015.

4. Close the access onto Iffley Road from The Plain Roundabout, approximately 2 weeks from 9 March to 22 March 2015.

5. Close the exit onto The Plain Roundabout from Iffley Road, approximately three weeks from 23 March to 17 April 2015.

How we’re getting on with the work

Traffic signal works at the Longwall Street junction were undertaken in December 2014. with all that remains to be completed are the installation of some signs.

Work commenced this week on the roundabout, with traffic management being installed on the city side of the roundabout. Over the next couple of weeks this work will proceed eastwards towards the roundabout.

Useful information

During the work, access to all properties will be maintained, and we will contact individuals directly about how we work outside of their properties.

The first phase of the works that requires traffic diversions will commence on 19th January as explained above. The local diversion route is planned along Cowley Road and Jeune Street. Larger vehicles are advised to use alternative routes to exit the city. Local buses will advise of any closures to stops.
