Title

The Plain Roundabout Improvements 4.2.15

How we’re getting on with the work

Work was completed on St Clements Road on Sunday 15 February 2015, with access to St Clements fully opened.

During the half term week (14 – 22 March 2015) work was completed on the western corner and pedestrian island of Cowley Place.

Work is currently underway on Cowley Road, with a closure in place until Sunday 8 March 2015. This closure has been essential, allowing the construction of the footways and Pedestrian Island on Cowley Road. During this closure the city council have been able to undertake essential repairs to Cowley Road.

Useful information

The third closure is underway, with a full closure at Cowley Road. The diversion in place is via Temple and Circus Street, and Iffley Road. This will continue to be in place until Sunday8March 2015.

The fourth closure will involve closing Iffley Road at the junction of The Plain Roundabout, restricting access to Iffley Road from the roundabout. This will commence on Monday 9th March 2015 and will be in place until Sunday 22 March 2015. During this period, there are diversions in place. These are listed below.
• Vehicles out of the city will be diverted via Cowley Road and Circus Street to Iffley Road.
• Cyclists out of the city are diverted via Cowley Road and Temple Street.
Local bus companies will advise of closures to bus stops.

During the work, access to all properties will be maintained, and we will contact individuals directly about how we work outside of your property.

About the work

The Plain roundabout scheme will remove one of the main cycling barriers into and out of Oxford city centre. The Plain is a busy five-arm roundabout with high bus flows and a history of cyclist casualties. It is also off-putting for less experienced riders. The county council’s work will improve the attractiveness and safety of the roundabout for cyclists and pedestrians by reducing the width of the circulatory carriageway and tightening the entrances onto the roundabout.
