Oxford to host new global cyber security centre
Foreign Secretary William Hague has announced that the UK’s new Global Centre for Security Capacity-Building would be based in Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford. The Oxford Martin School exists to address critical challenges of the future.
The Centre will receive £500,000 per annum and will become a leading global resource for:

- Coordinating global work on cyber threats and policies.
The Centre will be part of the Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance’s National Cyber Security Programme for keeping the UK safe in cyberspace.
That Office has assessed the need for coordinated cyber security as:
- The internet-related market in the UK is worth £82bn, with British businesses earning £1 from every £5 from the internet;
- 73 per cent of large corporations and 76 per cent of small businesses have reported a cyber breach in the past year;
- The National Security Strategy has categorised cyber attacks as a Tier One threat to national security, alongside international terrorism.
